Roseanne, Samantha, and Trump: Oh My!

Early Tuesday morning, Roseanne Barr tweeted this out, “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” “Vj” being Valarie Jarrett, who was a senior advisor to former President Barack Obama. This is very racist, to say the least, and a very nasty thing for anyone to say.

Roseanne Barr was the star of the ABC sitcom “Roseanne” which first aired in the late 1980s. It was recently rebooted a few months ago and many people on the right became very excited because Roseanne was a professed Trump supporter and her show was one that actually didn’t make fun of people on the right for once. So like Kanye West, (see my Discourse in American Society post) folks on the right jumped on the Roseanne bandwagon. Well, in the words of Ben Shapiro, “You live by the Kanye, you die by the Kanye.” Or in this case, you live by the Roseanne, you die by the Roseanne.

Immediately after Roseanne tweeted out her racist tweet, ABC dropped her show. So now she’s without a job, and people on the left are loving this. They’re loving this because this is their opportunity to show the world just how racist and evil everyone on the right is. From ABC News, this is the statement released by Channing Dungey, the president of ABC Entertainment, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.” Roseanne has since come out and said that “I am not racist, I was was & never will be,” Also calling her tweet “one stupid joke.” Now, where do I stand on this? I don’t approve of what Roseanne said at all. I think ABC was right in canceling her show. I’m upset when people on the left say similar things and I don’t like it when people on the right do these things, either. We already have enough double standards with the media.

Speaking of double standards in the media, Samantha Bee, who is a self-professed comedian and political commentator on TBS, went on a profanity rant and called Ivanka Trump a “feckless c*nt” and suggested that she should “put on something tight and low-cut” to change President Trump’s immigration policy, suggesting that Ivanka should sleep with her own father. This is an absolutely disgusting thing to say.

But people on the left don’t think so. Some people are suggesting that Samantha Bee was being “nice” in saying what she said about Ivanka and that she could have said much worse. Others are admitting what Bee said was vulgar, but what Roseanne said was racist so Roseanne is “worse” than Bee. I’m not going to compare the two, even I think the c-word is one the grossest word in the English language, because both said some really nasty things, and both are very wrong. But here’s the biggest issue: when Samantha Bee said what she did about Ivanka, no one in the mainstream media batted an eye. Well, maybe they did, but it didn’t even come close to blowing up like what happened with Roseanne. There was maybe a story or two but there was nothing condemning what she said. There’s simply no other explanation for this other than it’s because Roseanne is a Trump supporter and Samantha Bee is a liberal. Imagine for a second that Samantha Bee in a conservative and Barack Obama is still the president. If this were the case and Samantha said what she said Ivanka Trump to one of Obama’s daughters, she would have been crucified by everyone in the media, and rightly so. She would be labeled as a racist and would have her show canceled and would never be able to get a job again. But that’s not the case, is it? Instead, the left lets Samantha Bee slide and all she, and ABC have to do is apologize and they can continue on with their lives like nothing ever happened. Also, on Wednesday, the same day Bee made her comments about Ivanka, TBS also announced that Samantha Bee “will be recognized for advancing social change.”

Here’s another problem. Feminists and people on the left want women to speak out and be strong, but it’s really hard to take them seriously when they do things like this. There have also been countless times when press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has been relentlessly attacked by other women on the left, one of the most recent examples of this being Michelle Wolf at the White House correspondents dinner. If people on the left really want women to be strong, maybe they should stop attacking other women simply on the ground that they disagree with them. But at the same time, this is also helpful to Trump because when people on the left keep being nasty, it just drives more people into his camp and secures his reelection that much more.

Going back to the media’s double standard, time after time, the media continues to show their bias. It’s as if they don’t even care or try to hide it anymore. It’s blatantly obvious that they’re out to take down Trump and people on the right. Speaking of Trump, this is too funny not to share. The president tweeted this in a response to the whole Roseanne thing blowing up, “Bob Iger of ABC called Valarie Jarrett to let her know that ‘ABC does not tolerate comments like those’ made by Roseanne Barr. Gee, he never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC. Maybe I just didn’t get the call.” I mentioned in my “The Media Gets it Wrong…Big Time” piece that Trump has a superpower, and it’s that he can get people on the left to love, hate, or defend anything. But it actually turns out that he has a second superpower. This other superpower is that he can make anything about him. He did this as a part of his Memorial Day tweet last Monday saying, “Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud of how well out country is doing today. Best economy in decades, the lowest unemployment rate for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18 years), rebuilding our military and so much more. Nice!” No, Mr. President. Just, no. You’re doing it wrong. The first three words of the tweet were fine, but the rest should have been left out. But this is who Trump is, he’s always been in the spotlight and wanted the spotlight, and that’s not going to change just because he’s the president. That’s not making excuses for him, it’s just pointing out who he is and everybody knew this is who he was when we elected him.

Trump managed to do something that only he could do, which is to take the drama going on about Roseanne and make it about him. Well done, Mr. President. I mean, if we’re talking about saying mean things and insulting people, wasn’t Trump one of the best at doing that during his campaign? If you’re going to fling mud, be able to take it.
